Description
| Nitroglycerin (NTG) is a vasodilator drug and works through releasing nitric oxide (NO). The conversion is mediated by aldehyde dehydrogenase (encoded by ALDH2 gene). However, the Glu504Lys mutation of ALDH2 gene will reduce the activity of the enzyme and thus affect the efficacy of NTG. In addition, alcohol dehydrogenase (encoded by ADH1B gene) and aldehyde dehydrogenase are the key enzymes for alcohol metabolism. Mutations in these two genes affect alcohol metabolism resulting in the accumulation of acetaldehyde and other harmful substances. Therefore, ALDH2/ADH1B genetic testing can be used for guidelines of healthy alcohol consumption. |
